DIY Friday! Irish Soda Bread
Happy DIY Friday! Coming from a enthusiastic Irish family, we have some great St. Patrick's Day traditions. I thought it would be fun to share one of our family's recipes for St. Patrick's Day! We love to make this easy and yummy Irish Soda Bread!
All you need is:
- 4 Cups all-purpose flour
- 4 Tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 Tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 Cup of softened butter (1 stick)
- 1 Cup buttermilk
- 1 Egg
- 1/4 Cup Raisins (optional!)
- 1/4 Cup melted butter
- 1/4 Cup buttermilk
We used our Kitchen Aid with the dough hook, but this would be just as easy mixing by hand in a large bowl. Add the softened butter to the mixer and turn on low and add the sugar.
Add the eggs and mix through.
Next, add 1 Cup of the buttermilk.
Mix through well and add the rest of the dry ingredients, including the raisins. We took 1 teaspoon of the flour and coated the raisins in it to keep it from settling to the bottom.
Pour it out onto a floured surface and form into the round shape.
Put the bread on a greased cookie sheet. Melt the remaining 1/4 Cup of butter and mix with the 1/4 Cup buttermilk and brush on top of the dough.
Cut an X on the top and bake at 375 degrees for 35-45 minutes, until golden brown.
It will smell delicious and buttery so you may want to eat it right away! If you have will power you can wait and let it cool.
Then dig in and serve with softened butter and of course, Corned beef and cabbage!
A cup of tea or a cold Irish beer wouldn't hurt either!
Happy DIY Friday and St. Patrick's Day!
xoxo,
