6 Tips to Make the Most of Your Wedding Hair and Makeup Trial

6 tips to make the most of your wedding hair and makeup trial

Not every bride will want, need, or care to have a hair and makeup trial for their wedding day. However, if you’re a bride who simply wants peace of mind by knowing that your hair and makeup are up to your expectations and that you will be 100% satisfied and confident with how you look on your wedding day,  then a trial is a great option. Not only will it ensure you look your best on your big day, but it can also help eliminate stress.

A trial is also a fun way to get a little fancy and treat yourself with professionally done makeup and hair after all the wedding planning work you’ve done! You may also want to take advantage of your trial by having your bridal shower on the same day or going on a fancy date night with your fiance afterwards.

While a makeup trial can be fun and glamorous, there are some mistakes we see often that we’d like to address in order to make the most of your experience. I’ve compiled a list of tips to help you prepare for your trial and nail down the look you are going for.

First things first, you need to schedule your trial ahead of time. Makeup artists are on high demand and their schedules can be very packed. In order to get the date you want, I’d advise you book your trial as soon as you book your makeup artist for your wedding day.

I always recommend that brides book their hair and makeup trial four weeks prior to the wedding. Do not schedule your trial too far ahead of your wedding and run the risk that your skin tone, hair length, and hair color might be different than on your wedding day.

So now that you have your trial scheduled, let’s dive into the tips:

  1. Bring your ideas

A picture is worth a thousand words, right? As you’re browsing on Pinterest to look for inspirations for your wedding makeup and hair, save a few (but not too many) looks that you’re drawn to that match the overall theme of your wedding and colors. Trust me, your makeup artist will thank you for doing your homework in advance and showing them an image of the look you want to achieve.

I know it can be tempting to save EVERYTHING you see because there are so many pretty options! But try to find a common theme and ask yourself what style represents you the best.

2. Bring your veil and/or any hair accessories

If you plan on wearing a veil or any type of accessory in your hair, be sure to bring it with you for your trial. It is an essential part of your wedding day look, so it’s important to take it into account when you make hairstyle decisions.

3. Prep your skin and hair

Preparing your skin before the trial will help with makeup application and ensure that your makeup stays on all day. It can be as simple as doing an at-home facial and drinking lots of water. And don’t forget your hair too! My best tip to get more volume in your hair is to wash and condition it the day BEFORE the trial. Your overnight hair will help hold your wedding day hairdo better. Give it a try!

4. Bring your favorites

If you know of a few products that really work for you, especially if you have sensitive skin, bring them with you to the trial. Your makeup artist might not end up using them, but it’s always good to have them ready just in case. If you have a specific lipstick that you’d like to use on your wedding day, don’t be afraid to bring it and tell your artist.

5. Replicate your dress color and neckline

You don’t need to wear your wedding dress to your makeup and hair trial, but it’s helpful to wear something that replicates the color and neckline of your dress. If your dress is ivory, try to wear something similar to that. You may not have anything in your closet that has the same neckline as your wedding dress, so my tip for you is to take a picture of your dress and show it to your artist.

This will give them a better idea of what your dress looks like in order to give you a look that will complement it best.

6. Be honest and give feedback

If there was only one tip I could give you, it’d be this: be honest. If you like it, say it. If you don’t, say it too! That’s what the trial is for. Your artist would rather you tell them if you don’t like something than having you be upset on your wedding day because you don’t like the look they did for you.

Don’t shy away from giving honest feedback. Ask questions and tell them exactly how you feel about certain things.

I hope these tips are helpful. Tell me, do you feel more confident and prepared after having your makeup/hair trial? If you have any questions, leave a comment below. Or if you are looking for a wedding planner to take even more stress away, contact us here!
